POSTED 12/19~"Backstreet Boy meets KDWB girl" :C.J. -StarTribune.com

Patting the backside of a Backstreet Boy. Nice work if you can get it, and KDWB's Angi Taylor apparently got the job done in Key West with Nick Carter.

They were gossiped about on her morning radio show, but I thought it was more theater of the mind -- until viewing a video that Amanda Vath said she shot at a Key West Super-Vee-class world title speedboat race in November. Carter sponsored the winning team. Vath said she supports herself by selling things, such as this video, on eBay.com. "There has been rumor of them together, but no one has confirmation," Vath said. When she saw them, Vath said: "I was like, 'This is going to be a money shot if you get Nick and his supposed new girlfriend.' Those little teenies are going to eat that up." Vath said she knows Carter when she sees him but didn't know the woman she heard him call "Angi," although she has heard talk that he was connected to a Minnesota radio person. "When they were at the Nick Carter racing tent, he arrived there with her," Vath said. "He was driving and she was in the front seat. She was always like hanging around. Touching him, like touching his butt, grabbing his hand. Kind of like she wanted to show off." Bing, bing, bing. Showing off with flashy men appears to be Angi's modus operandi. "The pictures I have of them together with them kind of posing, it's supposed to be him and the racing team," Vath said. "There is no reason for her to be in the picture. I don't know if their relationship is genuine. You can't tell by looking."

NOW it's private?

The person who could tell us whether looks are deceiving is Angela Milosevic. Taylor is her stage name. She's not calling me, and her program director, Rob Morris, "would like to plead the Fifth because I try to stay as far away out of her personal life as possible." How private can it be when young people are reporting that Angi's been blah-blahing on the radio about what she did over the weekend with Nick? "I think she has moved away from that," he said. "Obviously, she's valuing a little bit of privacy here." Too late, isn't it? Morris said she didn't start it, but her sidekick, Dave What'shisname, did. Angi and Nick met during a Backstreet Boys promo tour through here. "I think he had known her from other visits the Backstreet Boys have done for this radio station," Morris said. "I don't know what mushroomed. It may have been an infatuation, flirtation, just a couple phone calls. I don't know." Asked whether he had seen the video from Key West, Morris said: "I didn't know there was a video. I heard about a picture, but I don't know if that's true or it's doctored or what." Morris thinks it might not be Angi. "Again, what she does on the weekends is her business," he said. Shouldn't Dave, whom I've nicknamed The Little Kibler for reasons I'll withhold, help her maintain a zone of privacy? "Probably," Morris said. "But if it's pop culture, it may be relatable to that. When she decides she wants to go public with it, I guess we'll all know." Hasn't she done that? "I heard you didn't believe it, though," he said. I remain suspicious. "Well, in the famous last words of most program directors, I guess you'll have to listen to the KDWB . . . morning show to find out more," Morris said. "Get that in the paper!" Whatever, man, to quote my 11-year-old nephew.

KDWB's Angi Taylor has a certain touch with Backstreet Boy Nick Carter.

Listeners heard it all

Alex Byrne, 14, of St. Louis Park, an avid listener, gave me a full report on the Nick-Angi-Dave radio stuff. Angi and Dave have talked about Nick Carter several times. For a couple of days, it seemed like a daily bit. Once Dave had someone pretend he was Nick and call in, obviously a joke. More recently, Angi announced that she wasn't going to talk about Nick anymore, because what they had was so precious, or something like that. She got all gooey and told Dave that it was just too early in her relationship to put it in the spotlight. Alex also reports that "Angi said Nick asked her not to talk about their relationship on the radio. She wants to but won't because she's respecting his wishes." It's doesn't bode well for a lasting relationship if Angi wants to exploit it for career purposes. This also is not a good sign. "They referred to him [Carter] as 'Oats' for a little bit because he had asked them not to use his name," Alex said. "But if they get married or something, she will talk about it." Don't hold your breath for wedding bells. Edit

Can They Make It On Their Own?

Justin's single gets the airplay. But Nick Carter is the really original one, and he deserves success.

New York City -- The other day, I found myself staring at larger-than-life posters of Justin Timberlake and Nick Carter in a mega-music store window.

Staring lustfully at those shiny bodies, I asked myself a deep and meaningful question: "Which will be crowned the king of solo debut efforts?"

It's clear that in order to make it as solo artists, both will need to be propelled by the right promotional machine, just as they were in their boy-band days.

With their debut solo albums now on store shelves, I can see how the print media are going to promote these guys: together in adjacent windows, and on magazine covers.

The treatment has been evenhanded so far, as magazines have been equally gaga over Justin and Nick. And why shouldn't they be? Nick, with that baby-face innocence and blonde messy hair, is still, even at 22, a dream come true. And then there's Justin, who, when not wearing his hair in an Afro, is worthy of being named the Godiva of eye candy.

Television is on the same path, giving both young artists ample airtime. The music channels are rotating their guest spots between Nick and Justin on all primetime shows. A "news update" of Nick is followed by a "news update" of Justin. With TV, the promotion of the entire body hasn't been lost to both our protagonists, who have altered their images accordingly.

The "Nicky" days have been retired for Carter as he grows into a man of much desire. The sports jerseys, a staple of his younger image, have been replaced with a James Dean leather jacket complemented by dirty jeans and fresh-from-the-floor T-shirts.

Nick is the boy-next-door turned badass, with the Blackfoot Indian chain tattooed on his right arm, providing us some new and wild bedroom fantasies (personally, I'd love to be his Lone Ranger).

He speaks softly and shyly and refuses to indulge interviewers about his personal life (is he gay, bi, confused?), giving him a wholesome quality that we love.

Justin has changed his image less drastically. He still has that trendy pop/hip-hop look and has added the Michael Jackson glove effect, in the form of X-game half gloves. He tries to add street cred to his image by wearing some "bling-bling" and sporting cornrows from time to time.

You can see his P-Diddy influences. There's the slick talking style, the street lingo, the endless self-promotion.

In the end, the TV battle clearly goes to Nick.

His single "Help Me" is currently dominating TRL, because his image change is real and refreshing -- unlike Justin's imitations of others' past successes.

Radio airplay is a different story. Station managers continue to think familiarity is all listeners care about. No one in charge of radio has any balls. (Does one have to check the "I'm a pussy" box on their application to get hired in radio these days?)

Justin's single is getting three times more air than Nick's. Why? Because Justin's song is the same sound as N'Sync's, minus the other four. He hasn't changed his musical style. Radio stations love the status quo.

Nick has changed his sound -- it's rock n roll reminiscent of early '80s power ballads with drum solos and screaming guitar riffs. Since radio stations are the last to love a different sound by an established act, the radio battle clearly goes to Justin.

Looking at these three media outlets, it would seem like a tie. But radio airplay determines, in part, the Billboards, and chart longevity is the biggest factor in an artist's staying power. So, sadly, Justin will probably make it bigger as a solo artist.

Nick really deserves to be on top. He has reinvented himself without Justin's cheesy imitation of other stars. But to be honest, um: we wouldn't mind him on the, uh, bottom either.

Posted 12/05 ~"Nick shoots 'I Got You'"

-Nick Carter fans have been confused about which songs from 'Now or Never' will be released where and when. It has been confirmed that 'Do I Have to Cry for You' will only be a single in the United States as 'I Got You' will be released in Europe and Australia as the second single. Australia won't get the single until February. The Backstreet Boys star shot the video in Key West during the Powerboat Racing World Championships (where his team took first place) on Tuesday. For the video, it is rumored that Nick will be joined in various snippets by fans from a variety of different countries.

Posted 11/27~ Backstreet Boys Sue For $75 Million, Release From Contract

~The Backstreet Boys have filed suit against the Zomba Recording Corporation, the parent company of their record label, Jive, asking for $75 million and release from their 1994 recording contract.

The suit, filed Monday in U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, cites breach of contract, intentional interference with contract, trademark infringement and unfair competition as the basis of the complaint. Plaintiffs Backstreet Boys Inc. and Backstreet Boys Productions Inc. two corporations created to oversee business opportunities for Kevin Richardson, Brian Littrell, Nick Carter, Howie Dorough and A.J. McLean are asking for at least $75 million and all the money Zomba obtained as a result of its allegedly unfair behavior.

In November 1999, following the release of Millennium, the group revised its 1994 contract, agreeing to deliver two additional albums to Zomba by predetermined dates in exchange for advance payments of future royalties. Black & Blue was released the following year, and the Boys would receive $5 million if the second of the two promised albums was rendered by April 30, 2002.

But things got screwy after Black & Blue, the suit alleges. As the group prepared its follow-up, the Boys received no support from their label in terms of song selection or choice of producers, they insist, adding that the group's artistic suggestions were outright refused.

Instead, the group claims Jive was vested in Nick Carter's solo album, Now or Never, which was released October 29. Since Carter was working on his album, he was "unable and unwilling" to participate in the recording and subsequent delivery of the Backstreet Boys' fourth album by the deadline, costing the Backstreet Boys $5 million.

"We are committed to the Backstreet Boys," the group collectively said in a statement, "and we will protect our group from anybody or anything that tries to break us apart. We are disappointed that our longtime label Jive Records has attempted to irresponsibly exploit our group. The five of us are writing for our new CD and setting concert dates for our upcoming worldwide summer tour."

The suit also claims Zomba is using the Backstreet Boys' trademark without permission to promote Carter's Now or Never. Zomba has the right to use the BSB trademark only as it pertains to promoting Backstreet Boys releases.

The suit says that Zomba posted an ad for Now or Never on the main page of www.backstreetboys.com that directed visitors to www.nickcarter.com, and that the label sent e-mails to thousands of subscribers to the Backstreet Boys mailing list. Together these infringements "have the effect of misleading visitors to the site into believing that the Now or Never album is being endorsed or sponsored by BBI and BPI, and that it embodies the same songwriting and production qualities that fans of the band have come to associate with Backstreet Boys albums."

A spokesperson for Zomba wouldn't comment on pending litigation as a matter of policy.

Posted 11/22~ Considering the release of "Now or Never" M Magazine asked Nick Carter what he would do "Now" and what he would "Never"do....some pretty awesome answers!!

WHAT NICK WOULD DO NOW:

Make peace with Eminem... Go on tour with Linkin Park... Go skateboarding with Avril Lavigne... Star in a creepy horror movie (as the villain!)... Go crowd surfing during a concert... Go on a solo tour... Start a musical group with his family... Go on Celebrity Fear Factor (bugs, snakes and slimy stuff, oh my!)... Start his own clothing line, a la J.Lo... Pierce his tongue... Dye his hair blue... Party with Nelly... Go on Dawson's Creek...Audition for American Idol... Do a cover of the '70s song, "Brick House!"... Go skinny dipping in the Bahamas... Play a game of one-on-one with Kobe Bryant... Belly dance with Shakira... Star in a re-make of Grease... Open up for Ozzy Osbourne in concert... Fly a hot air balloon around the world...

WHAT NICK WOULD NEVER DO:

Go bungee jumping with friends... Join O-Town... Get his nose pierced... Wear a big fat gold (bling bling) necklace that says "Nick"... Kiss a jellyfish... Take fashion tips from Christina Aguilera... Let Aaron beat him up (just once!)... Star in his own reality TV series... Get a gold tooth just like Nelly... Start his own music magazine... Eat a pizza with worms on it for $10... Sing a cover of "Macarena"... Give Britney Spears a kiss on the cheek... Break up BSB...

-I told you it was pretty suprising...and I agree with you Nick, I wouldn't take fashion advice from Ms.Aguilera either! Edit

Posted 11/22~Five Questions With Nick Carter
By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY
AP Music Writer
1. Why did you do more rock than pop songs on your album?
Carter: I'm just doing what's coming out of me. I have a really hard time of faking who I am. ... I have such a passion for rock music. When people listen to the music, and when they see me perform, I think that's the one time that they'll really understand what I'm doing is for real. I'm not here to fool anybody or follow a trend.

2. Have you felt you haven't been able to do your own thing as a Backstreet Boy?
Carter: No. I like the Backstreet Boys because I kind of consider myself a chameleon. Even though I say I love rock music, I love all types of music. ... I get a chance to grow and sing in a band together as one voice that creates, like, one out of five that creates one big voice. I'm just a part of that. So I really honestly feel like it's something that I love doing.

3: Are you worried your album isn't getting enough attention?
Carter: I can't even be happier. I'm learning. ... I'm really happy the way things are going. And the way I feel is I don't care if I sell 10 records or 10 million, it doesn't matter either way to me.

4: Did you slow down after your arrest?
Carter: I didn't slow down too much. The one thing, I was just being myself. Being a normal 21-year-old who goes out to a club, and in Tampa, that was the situation I got into. ... I haven't slowed down, I'm still crazy and wild and being myself, and you might see me at a nightclub sometime.

5. I've read that you're dating Britney Spears, but you say you barely know her. Where do you think those rumors came from?
Carter: Wishful thinking? I have no clue. I think people like to start stuff or something. They better be careful though, you know why? You keep saying it, it might be true.
